Andrew Thompson took the 2011 Fujitsu V8 Supercars Series champion title in style today, winning the opening race at Homebush.
He backed up his pole then lead home Nick Percat and Chaz Mostert.
It was his 11th victory of the year and handed him enough point buffer to seal the title with a race to go tomorrow.
"To wrap our Championship on Saturday was our ideal scenario, to be able to do that and do it with a race win is an unbelievable feeling" he said post race.
"For me it has been a amazing year It's been an amazing year. It has been a massive come back from where I was last year and the support of Triple Eight has given me, along with Monster Energy and Gear Wrench has been incredible, they made it easy for me to keep my focus on driving."
Behind him Percat had kept the pressure on all race but was unable to unsettle the 888 Racing driver. The equally impressive Mostert was able to claim his maiden podium “We had a pretty good race,” Mostert said.
“I made a good start and then the three of us (Andrew Thompson and Nick Percat) pulled away a bit from the main pack … I struggled a little in the mid-part of the race but the car came on again towards the end and we were one of the quickest out there which was promising,” he added.
“We’ll make a few small changes for tomorrow but I’m very happy with the car and am looking forward to having another crack at it tomorrow … my goal for this weekend was to again qualify in the top ten and be around the top five at the end of the weekend so we’re on track to achieve that,” Mostert concluded.
The final race of the Fujitsu season takes place tomorrow.
